When economists comment on holiday gift-giving, it is usually to condone the healthy effect of spending on the macroeconomy. However, an important feature of gift-giving is that consumption choices are made by someone other than the final consumer. A pontentially important microeconomic aspect of gift-giving is that gifts may be mismatched with the recipients´ preferences. This paper gives estimates of the deadweight loss of holiday gift-giving based on surveys given to Yale undergraduates.…

Behavorial economics tell us that emotions can profoundly affect individual behavoir and decision-making. Does this also apply to societies at large, i.e. can societies experience mood states that affect their collective decision making? By extension is the public mood correlate or even predective of economic indicators? Here we investigate whether measumerents of collective mood states derived from large-scale Twitter feeds are correlated to the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average…

"We investigate the effect of house price changes on MSA-level divorce rates using data for 1991-2010 from the Current Population Survey and the Federal Housing Finance Agency. This paper concentrates on both the positive and normative effects of punishments that enforce laws to make production and consumption of particular goods illegal, with illegal drugs as the mainexample. Optimal public expenditures on apprehension and conviction of illegal suppliers obviously depend on the extent of the difference between the social and private value of consumption of illegal goods, but they also depend crucially on the elasticity of demand for these goods. In particular,…

This paper uses the model Chiappori-Levitt- Groseclose (2002) to test for mixed-strategy Nash equilibria in a game between a kicker and a goalkeeper, in a situation of a soccer penalty kick. The main contribution of this paper is to develop an alternative testing methodology, based on the use of a simultaneous-equation regression approach that directly tests the equilibrium conditions. Using the same date than Chiappori, Levitt and Groseclose we find similar results than them, and we are…
