CROSS-BORDER SPILLOVER: U.S. GUN LAWS AND VIOLENCE IN MEXICO (Dube, Dube & García Ponce)

To what extent, and under what conditions, does access to arms fuel violent crime? To answer this question, we exploit a unique natural experiment: the 2004 expiration of the U.S. Federal Assault Weapons Ban exerted a spillover on gun supply in Mexican municipios near Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, but not near California, which retained a pre-existing state level ban. We find first that Mexican municipios located closer to the non-California border states experienced differential increases…

THE DEADWEIGHT LOSS OF CHRISTMAS (By Joel Waldfogel. Yale University)

When economists comment on holiday gift-giving, it is usually to condone the healthy effect of spending on the macroeconomy. However, an important feature of gift-giving is that consumption choices are made by someone other than the final consumer. A pontentially important microeconomic aspect of gift-giving is that gifts may be mismatched with the recipients´ preferences. This paper gives estimates of the deadweight loss of holiday gift-giving based on surveys given to Yale undergraduates.…

THE ROLE OF BEAUTY IN THE LABOR MARKET (By Philipp Kraft)

The present paper breaks new ground in labor economic research by providing direct evidence of potential discrimination among attractive and unattractive job candidates. It utilizes a field experiment, the so-called "CV testing approach" to determine discrimination in recruitment based on physical attractiveness. Two individuals who are equivalent on all required and desired job characteristics except their physical attractiveness, apply for the same vacancy. Application photos are used to… Continue

TWITTER MOOD PREDICTS THE STOCK MARKET (By Mollen, Mao & Zeng)

Behavorial economics tell us that emotions can profoundly affect individual behavoir and decision-making. Does this also apply to societies at large, i.e. can societies experience mood states that affect their collective decision making? By extension is the public mood correlate or even predective of economic indicators? Here we investigate whether measumerents of collective mood states derived from large-scale Twitter feeds are correlated to the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average…

UNA REVISIÓN AL ESTUDIO DE LA DELINCUENCIA Y EL CRIMEN (By Sandoval & Martínez Barón)

HOUSE PRICES AND MARITAL STABILITY (By Farnham & Schmidt)

HousingPricesAndMaritalStability.pdf

"We investigate the effect of house price changes on MSA-level divorce rates using data for 1991-2010 from the Current Population Survey and the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Our findings suggest that changing house prices significantly affect divorce rates, and that these effects are assymmetric with respect to housing gains versus losses.…

THE ECONOMIC THEORY OF ILLEGAL GOODS:THE CASE OF DRUGS. (By Gary Becker et al.)

This paper concentrates on both the positive and normative effects of punishments that enforce laws to make production and consumption of particular goods illegal, with illegal drugs as the mainexample. Optimal public expenditures on apprehension and conviction of illegal suppliers obviously depend on the extent of the difference between the social and private value of consumption of illegal goods, but they also depend crucially on the elasticity of demand for these goods. In particular,…

UN MODELO MICROECONÓMICO DE ACTIVIDAD CRIMINAL Y SU CONTROL... (By Leobardo Plata et al.)

PENALTY KICKS IN SOCCER: AN ALTERNATIVE METHODOLOGY FOR TESTING (By German Coloma)

This paper uses the model Chiappori-Levitt- Groseclose (2002) to test for mixed-strategy Nash equilibria in a game between a kicker and a goalkeeper, in a situation of a soccer penalty kick. The main contribution of this paper is to develop an alternative testing methodology, based on the use of a simultaneous-equation regression approach that directly tests the equilibrium conditions. Using the same date than Chiappori, Levitt and Groseclose we find similar results than them, and we are…

THE GEOGRAPHY OF FEAR (By Daniel Treisman)

Using data from six surveys, this paper find that levels of reported fear of different dangers correlate strongly across both individuals and countries. I construct indexes of fearfulness for 15-25 countries and map the prevalence of fear in Western Europe. About two thirds of the crossnational variation within Europe can be explained by differences in pessimism -the degree to which respondents exaggerate the likelihood of disasters. Among the countries for which I have date, the most robust… Continue

"El arte y la cultura están, en principio, sujetos a la escasez, es decir, no son bienes libres; proporcionan «utilidad» a los individuos que las demandan, y necesitan recursos para su creación. Tan pronto como es posible observar expresiones de preferencias en los individuos, –el deseo de pagar por una entrada de teatro, el pintar un cuadro para su venta o…
