PENALTY KICKS IN SOCCER: AN ALTERNATIVE METHODOLOGY FOR TESTING (By German Coloma)

This paper uses the model Chiappori-Levitt- Groseclose (2002) to test for mixed-strategy Nash equilibria in a game between a kicker and a goalkeeper, in a situation of a soccer penalty kick. The main contribution of this paper is to develop an alternative testing methodology, based on the use of a simultaneous-equation regression approach that directly tests the equilibrium conditions. THE GEOGRAPHY OF FEAR (By Daniel Treisman)

Using data from six surveys, this paper find that levels of reported fear of different dangers correlate strongly across both individuals and countries. I construct indexes of fearfulness for 15-25 countries and map the prevalence of fear in Western Europe. About two thirds of the crossnational variation within Europe can be explained by differences in pessimism -the degree to which respondents exaggerate the likelihood of disasters. This paper studies the link between television and divorce in Brazil by explotaing variation in the timing of availability of the signal of Rede Globo -the network that a virtual monopoly on telenovelas in the country- acroos municipal areas.
